Restoration

Living wall restoration, when a wall has been left.

When a wall has thinned, dried out or been left, we find what failed and put it right. Replanting, repairs to the irrigation and improvements to the system, so an existing wall can grow well again.

Based in London. Working across the capital and the Home Counties.

01 — What restoration includes

Find what failed, then put the wall back.

A tired wall is rarely just a planting problem. We look at the system before we buy a single plant.

01

A survey of the failure

Plants, irrigation, substrate and fixings. We say which of them is actually the cause.

02

Irrigation put right

Dry zones, blocked drippers and controllers that have drifted are repaired before replanting.

03

Replanting

Gaps are filled with plants suited to the light the wall gets now, not to the scheme it started with if that no longer fits.

04

The system, improved

Where the build-up itself is the problem, we alter it rather than planting into a fault.

05

A wall we did not install

Most restoration is of someone else’s wall. We work to what is there.

06

A plan afterwards

Restoration without a way to look after the wall just resets the clock. We leave you with that plan.

02 — How it works

From a tired wall to one that can carry on.

01

Survey

We find out why the wall has declined, on site, not from a photograph alone.

02

Scope

Repair, replanting and anything the system itself needs, with a price before we start.

03

The work

Plants and the system are brought back together.

04

Aftercare

A schedule so it does not slip back to where it was.

04 — What we are putting right

A thin wall is a symptom.

Most walls we are asked to restore have been drying out in patches, or were planted for a light level the courtyard does not actually have. New plants on top of that fail in the same places.

We separate what can be replanted from what has to be repaired. Sometimes the kindest advice is a smaller scope than the one you arrived with.

When the work is done, the wall needs the same care as a new one. We can stay on for that, or leave you with a clear note of what it needs.

05 — Chosen by the wall

Two kinds of tired wall.

The photograph looks similar. The work does not.

The plants have gone

Gaps, leggy growth, a scheme that no longer matches the light. Replanting, once the water is honest.

The system has gone

Irrigation, substrate or fixings that no longer do their job. Repair first, or the new planting repeats the failure.

“The scheme was clear from the start, and the finished wall is exactly the one we talked through. It has changed the courtyard completely.”
